State
of Maine Record Rainbow Caught by
Steve Day on Upper Andro
The Upper Andro area is a peaceful
and tranquil area with great scenery
and a diverse opportunity of fishing
choices for all who come to try
their luck.
On the morning of June 5th at
approximately 9:30 a.m., I caught my
second fish of the morning while
throwing a white Zonker from my 9.6
ft spin rod. This huge Rainbow trout
was one of 12 that I landed this day
between Gilead and Bethel but I knew
immediately that it was much bigger
than what I expected to catch that
day.
After a 15 minute fight including
three long runs and several shorter
ones, with a couple of jumps and
cartwheels, the huge Rainbow was
brought to hand. The length and
girth of the fish was 24" x 14.5"
and weighed in officially at 6.52
lbs. When it was officially weighed
9 hours later the huge Rainbow broke
the record by a half pound.

New York Sun
travel and outdoor writer Jay Akasie covers
the Upper Androscoggin River as a top
fishing destination.
Read it here.
Once famous for its filth, the upper
Androscoggin might yet become an
angling destination — if only it can
get better press coverage.

T-shirt weather in early spring is
always rare and precious in Maine,
but there's no better way to enjoy
it than floating down a beautiful
river. The trees are bare, but the
sunshine warms everything it
touches, including the clear waters
of the Androscoggin River.
That's right. The Androscoggin. The
river once famous for its dirty,
smelly, polluted water now looks,
smells, and fishes like an L.L. Bean
commercial — and has become a media
darling to boot....read

Bethel, Maine
and the BIG Adventure Center were the
locations for the 2007 Free Family Fishing
Festival. With showers on Friday night, I
was fearful of another rainy day for the
Family Fishing Festival but that wasn’t to
be. The weather treated us all to a
fantastic day of gentle breezes, glorious
sunshine and tons of kids and adults to
enjoy loads of fun.

information you request. We'll also
automatically enter you in a contest to win
a vacation to Bethel, Maine.
Many anglers come for the trout, but this
underutilized Maine river gives up
smallmouths, too.
The 4-inch salty stick worm had barely
touched down when a dark shadow rose from a
crevice between granite boulders. As the
shadow materialized into a smallmouth bass,
it launched upward and snatched the lure.
The fish
responded to the hookset like any
respectable river smallie should — it went
airborne. After four jumps and several
drag-pulling runs, I secured a
thumb-and-forefinger lock on the lower lip
of the 2-pounder, held it up for my
companions to see and then immediately
released it.
Capturing an
explosive smallmouth on my first cast from a
river I never fished before is exhilarating.
However, in this instance the credit goes to
Master Guide Sandy MacGregor for putting me
on a great spot in Maine’s Androscoggin
River....read

People are
gathered here in Gilead, Maine on the banks
of the beautiful Androscoggin River, that

Now it is one of the finest and most scenic
clear water rivers in the country.
With the combined efforts of the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
Fish Hatcheries Division, Retired Game
Wardens, Trout Unlimited, Guides and members
of other interested groups, make this new
method of stocking fish work.....read
